Kathukutti was a "Kamal Haasan" movie, but it featured more of a story than of a typical Kamal Haasan movie. The movie had some touching scenes between him and his wife Saritha, and she sang a couple of songs in the movie. Kathukutti did not have a pre-release title, just a working title of "Chitu Kumarai" ("The Jugglers"). He later changed his mind about the genre to comedy film. The call sheet for Kathukutti shows that it originally had two girls as heroines. His first choice for the second heroine was Nalini, but she rejected the offer. So he signed up an unknown girl, Perumol, who acted as a village belle role. In the final version of the film, Perumol is not seen much and no songs have been picturized on her. Kathukutti was Kamal's second movie after "Avargal" that he produced under "Greenland Pictures". For this film, Kamal took a risk and decided against big banners and went for a new producer, Prakash Raj. The producer wanted Kamal to take a high pay as he believed that Kamal's name value would make this movie a success. Kamal was upfront with him and said that he did not have a lot of savings. So Kamal signed up Prakash Raj, a Bollywood producer. The release date was postponed from mid-August to October 1990 after budget overruns by the producers. The film has been described as a family entertainer. Although, in an interview with "The Hindu" in March 2008, K Balachander said that the film promoted casteism and he would never make a movie on casteism again. He added that it is a very delicate topic and done in a jocular manner. cfa1e77820
